Everyday, thousands of Sikhs leave Indian occupied Panjab in search for a new home in the West; yet, the plight of Panjabi Sikhs who flee their homeland is a grim and untold story. In the aftermath of the Indian State’s brutality on the Sikhs in 1984, Sikhs continue to be displaced to this day. Many Sikhs are left with no option and often find themselves in similar or worse circumstances.

The Sikh Displacement Project intervenes by mapping, documenting, and physically reaching Sikhs who are forced to take on these harrowing journeys. Additionally, the SDP unpacks the multitude of reasons behind Panjab’s continual and accelerated depopulation. Their journeys are a part of our history – we aim to bridge the gaps created by borders and tell their stories.

Our team is already on the ground and has established contact with Sikhs who have fled Panjab and are in various parts of Europe. In its first phase, the SDP team arrived in Poland in March 2022 to meet and document the stories of Sikhs who were forced to navigate precarious conditions at the height of the Ukraine War. Since then, the SDP team has interviewed, documented and supported 25+ Sikhs across Poland, Germany, and other countries in mainland Europe.

The team also assists Sikh migrants with their immediate needs, including access to food and water, rent, funds for safe travel, SIM cards, and other resources, along with connecting individuals and families to local organizations to provide long-term support.

To sustain the Sikh Displacement Project, we are raising funds in order to allow our small team to travel and meet Sikhs on their journeys. Having started in Eastern Europe, the team will also reach Sikhs elsewhere in various parts of the world, as well, in subsequent phases of the project.

Funding has been determined based on costs the team on ground has taken on so far:

Support with lodging, travel to and from locations (including local transit, airfare etc.), and basic necessities such as food and water – $5,000

Equipment for documenting stories such a camera, batteries, memory cards, and video/audio production – $2,000

For the team to have the ability to reach contacts in other parts of the world outside of Europe and maintain the project’s reach – $5,000

Support for Sikh migrants the team meets who require immediate assistance due to various conditions (immigration status, documentation, etc.) – $5,000

You can find out more about the Sikh Displacement Project at @DisplacedSikhs on both Instagram and Twitter.

The Sikh Displacement Project is a collaborative effort and the team greatly appreciates your support.

Support UNITED SIKHS: Panjab Flood Relief 2025

Panjab is in crisis. Entire villages are underwater. Families have been displaced. Crops, homes, and livelihoods have been swept away by floods unlike anything seen in recent history.

UNITED SIKHS teams are on the ground rescuing families, treating thousands of patients, and delivering daily food, water, and medical supplies across the most affected districts.

But this isn’t a short-term disaster. Thousands will need support not just today, but for weeks and months to come. And we are committed to being there—through every phase.

What Your Support Makes Possible

Your donation fuels direct relief and long-term recovery:

Your Support = Empowered Youth in Panjab

The youth of Panjab stand at a crucial crossroads. The challenges they face are complex, reaching into their identity, aspirations, and well-being. Yet, we see immense potential in each young person—a potential that, with the right support, can flourish into something transformative, a change that uplifts lives across the entire community.

This year, UNITED SIKHS has taken several initiatives to support and empower Panjab’s youth. From education and career guidance to cultural connection and substance abuse prevention, we’re committed to creating opportunities that allow our youth to thrive and stay anchored in their roots.

Here’s how your support has helped us make a difference and how we can continue to uplift and empower our youth together:

Project Galwakdi Gurbani Kirtan: The next generation can only preserve the essence of Sikhi by staying connected with Gurbani, Kirtan, and embracing Sikh teachings in daily life. Through Project Galwakkdi, we hosted initiatives like Anhad Jhunkar, where over 300 children performed Kirtan together after months of Gurbani Kirtan training. With your support, we aim to elevate this learning experience by offering raag-based Kirtan programs for youth, ensuring a deeper, lifelong connection to Sikhi.

Project Kirti Self-Employment Program: We assist young individuals with financial support and required skills to become self-employed or begin the entrepreneurship journey directly.

Civil Services Preparation: With the number of Sikh IAS and IPS officers in Panjab declining due to fewer candidates taking these exams, we’re working to motivate youth to pursue civil service careers. To support this goal, we provide top-tier coaching facilities for selected meritorious yet financially disadvantaged students.

Education Support: With your support, we’re able to continue covering school and college fees for students facing financial barriers.

Career Counseling: Career counseling sessions have been vital for guiding youth on available career paths and helping them make informed choices. These sessions also provide parents with insights on how to support their children in reaching their full potential.

Sports Development: We proudly support youth icon Amritbir Singh in launching sports and fitness centers across villages in Gurdaspur. With your help, we can expand this initiative throughout Panjab, providing positive outlets for youth and steering them away from harmful distractions like substance abuse.

Sikhs for Business: The innovative business networking platform 'Sikhs for Business' is quickly becoming a springboard for youth, offering a supportive network, mentorship, and training to start and grow their businesses. As it evolves into a global network, it’s providing valuable opportunities for young entrepreneurs to thrive.

Rescue and Rehabilitation: Beyond spreading awareness and motivating youth to stay drug-free, our teams actively support individuals battling addiction. With your support, we aim to establish rehabilitation centers modeled after our successful program in Canada, bringing comprehensive recovery resources to those in need.

Financial Support: Athletes like Harpreet Singh, who required airfare from Panjab to Germany to compete in the World Weightlifting Championships, turn to us for support. Thanks to your ongoing generosity, we can help talented young people pursue their dreams and achieve excellence.

Your Support Matters

We invite you to be part of this journey of hope and transformation. Help create a better, brighter future for the youth of Panjab. Every contribution, no matter the size, matters.

Help a Pakistani Sikh Family

Based primarily in and around Peshawar, Pakistan’s tiny ethnic Pashtun Sikh community has been frequently and alarmingly targeted by gunmen multiple times in the recent past. On June 24th, Manmohan Singh, who owned a shop in Peshawar, Khyber Pakhtunkhwa province, was returning home in an auto-rickshaw when two motorbike-borne assailants followed him and opened fire, killing him on the spot. The 32-year-old was the sole breadwinner in his family and is survived by his parents, wife, son and a disabled younger brother. Please hit the donate button to support this family!
