Inspiring Action Through Art
ICAAD's ARTivism initiative launched in 2020 to inspire greater public awareness and social action through the arts.
Some stories are too urgent, too human, and too long-suppressed to be left to policy papers alone. ICAAD's Artivism program brings together artists and activists whose work does what legal arguments cannot always reach: it moves people.
Through painting, film, poetry, sculpture, photography, and mixed media, ICAAD's Artivists-in-Residence create public art that confronts injustice and builds solidarity across communities.
Their work has reached law firms, film festivals, galleries, and global audiences. It has brought survivor voices and artistic witness to the 1984 anti-Sikh genocide into human rights spaces where those stories are rarely centered.
It has given artistic form to the story of the Banaban people, an indigenous Pacific Island community forcibly displaced from their home by colonial mining over 70 years ago, whose land was destroyed and whose struggle for justice continues. It has explored what it means to carry a Sikh identity in post-9/11 America, and what it costs when history is deliberately erased.
Art reaches people where reports do not. It invites reflection, dialogue, and healing. And in the hands of the right artists, it becomes a form of accountability.
Your support helps ICAAD incubate, fund, and amplify this work, connecting artists with human rights infrastructure, public platforms, and communities who need their stories told.
