#BoldLikeABoy Leadership Program: engaging in conversations about healthy masculinity, learning to regulate all emotions, how to let their authenticity shine & more!
Why Boys, Why Singhs?
Following the success of our young Kaurs’ Lead Like A Girl Leadership Program, launched earlier this year, we want to respond to the growing call for similar programs for boys and young men. We are following the lead of violence-survivors and the diverse families we serve: in the past 15+ years so many have told us that they wished someone would work with the boys and men in an organized, safe way, rooted in our community’s history and unique ethics.
Why Bold?
Our boys are often told to be “bold” which they confuse with not showing emotions and not sharing fears. Through this unique program we aim to redirect them to a positive idea of being bold:
• being able to question discrimination..
• being able to recognize and regulate emotions…
• being able to be sensitive…
• being able to stop self from aggression…
How can they be strong and masculine without abusing anyone else?
Taking off the gendered pressure of always being compelled to be strong! Engaging Singhs in conversations about healthy masculinity, learning to regulate all emotions, and how to let their authenticity shine is critical. Especially when they are receiving violence messaging and at times being targeted by violence in the world, how can they rise above with confidence and strength?
How can we make sure they realize being strong does not require making anyone else weak?
#BoldLikeABoy will engage in all these questions and more.
Conflict management, conflict resolution, healthy communication, and parenting are skills that can be developed towards positive cultural change: hurt people do not always hurt other people, provided they get the right opportunities, commitment and support.
Help us build and amplify that nuanced conversation today!
We see how gender biases HURT boys and men, while also giving them messages of superiority. This combination is often at the root of the violence boys and men end up perpetrating, that further causes cycles of harm.
Your support now can help change that!
Donations during Dasvandh Week will go towards:
1. Hiring a subject-matter expert contractor to develop a curriculum with us that serves boys ages
8-11 & their development. We have identified a former teacher and violence prevention educator who
has worked in various communities.
2. Providing stipends for young Singhs who can engage in projects in their sangat: such as being aware and bringing awareness to dynamics that are rooted in biased assumptions rather than
egalitarian values of Sikhi. Singhs will receive mentorship, volunteer hours, and camaraderie with other Singhs who have holistic and healthy ideas of Sikh masculinity committed to justice.
3. Expanding outreach to families who especially seek resources that support parenting with care and without violence.
Your generous giving can make this possible during DVNWeek.
