Thanks to your support, ICAAD has been actively advancing justice across the Caribbean and Pacific, equipping advocates with data-driven tools, shaping international legal standards, and holding governments accountable. Here’s what we’ve accomplished together in just the past three months:
I. TrackGBV Advocacy Workshop Builds Regional Momentum
This month, advocates from across the Pacific joined ICAAD’s full-day TrackGBV workshop to explore how judicial data can fuel stronger gender-based violence (GBV) advocacy.
Participants from Papua New Guinea, Vanuatu, Fiji, and the Solomon Islands shared practical strategies for using the TrackGBV Dashboard to engage the judiciary and push for reform. We're seeing fresh momentum in PNG and Vanuatu, renewed energy in Fiji, and strong interest in follow-up work in the Solomon Islands.
This workshop marks a new phase of regional collaboration in using legal data for justice.
II. Holding Jamaica Accountable at the UN
As Jamaica faced its fourth Universal Periodic Review (UPR), ICAAD joined local partners—Stand Up for Jamaica, Jamaicans for Justice, and the Jamaica Environment Trust—to spotlight urgent human rights concerns.
Key issues included:
- Rampant GBV with poor enforcement
- Inhumane detention of mentally ill individuals
- Political pressure on civil society
- Environmental degradation in protected areas
Our joint submission outlined bold reforms, including repealing colonial-era laws, strengthening legal protections, and ratifying the Escazú Agreement.
III. Challenging Gender Stereotypes at the UN
ICAAD submitted expert legal analysis to the UN Committee on the Elimination of Discrimination Against Women (CEDAW), contributing to a new General Recommendation on gender stereotypes.
Our report:
- Analyzed how stereotypes undermine justice in GBV cases
- Provided real-world case studies
- Offered actionable steps for reforming justice systems
By influencing global standards, ICAAD is ensuring gender equity isn’t just a goal—but a legal obligation.
IV. Shedding Light on Human Rights in Grenada
Ahead of Grenada’s UPR, ICAAD submitted a stakeholder report built on in-country research and interviews with 28 key stakeholders.
The report focused on:
- Persistent GBV and discrimination
- Gaps in implementation of past commitments
- Evidence from ICAAD’s TrackGBV program and EU Spotlight Initiative work
We offered clear legal and policy recommendations to advance human rights protections in Grenada.
