The Sikh Coalition’s federal policy portfolio covers many different topics—from hate crimes to education and transnational repression to immigration. As you know, your dasvandh is critical to our work across so many fronts. One unexpected challenge this year, however, has been the need to stand up for Sikh truckers in the face of new rules affecting Sikh and Punjabi drivers in the industry.
The first, announced in May, was a tighter set of regulations around English proficiency. While we all know that an ability to speak and understand English is required on the road, the way this new regulation was laid out raised serious questions: How could we make sure Sikh and Punjabi drivers weren’t being profiled? What could a driver do if they are falsely declared “non-proficient” due to their accent, or even a prejudiced officer? We put these questions to the Department of Transportation, and continue fighting for answers—including pushing to get access to parts of the guidance that remain deliberately hidden from the public.
The second rule, however, was even more discriminatory. In September, the administration tried to cancel the drivers’ licenses of nearly 200,000 truckers based not on their safety record or even English abilities, but on their immigration status alone. The types of drivers who would have been harmed by this rule were lawfully present in the United States, and the government even admitted that there was no safety justification for their action. Thankfully, a court has put a stop to this rule for now—supported in part by an amicus brief that the Sikh Coalition wrote.
Throughout these policy changes, the Sikh Coalition hasn’t just done legal work. We’ve also created and shared resources in English and Punjabi; presented to truckers in gurdwarae in California, Indiana, and New Jersey (see the images above); connected sangat members to the media to share their stories; informed members of Congress; and more. And we plan to continue all this work and more into the new year, but we need your help to do it. When you donate to the Sikh Coalition, you are funding a full slate of work—legal, advocacy, education, community development, and media engagement—that fights for the rights of those in need.
No matter what, the Sikh Coalition won’t stop fighting for Sikh truckers or any other sangat member who is under threat of discrimination. Your support makes our work possible.
