TAKE ACTION in Support of Hardworking Asylum Seekers
April 21, 2026 (Nationwide) — The Sikh Coalition has an opportunity for you to TAKE ACTION to stand against a harmful new rule targeting asylum-seekers. Read more below, and then use our free advocacy tool to submit a public comment by the deadline of this Friday, April 24.
For context, the Department of Homeland Security (DHS) and U.S. Citizenship and Immigration Services (USCIS) have proposed this new rule. Its ultimate effect is to make it much harder to apply for asylum and work while an asylum application is being processed. One major part of the proposed rule means that, based on current application backlogs, USCIS would stop issuing any new work authorization for asylum seekers for sometime between 14 and 173 years!
The Sikh community knows firsthand the value of the international human right to claim asylum. Sikhs have persevered through persecution, discrimination, and violence since the beginnings of our faith tradition. Following the Sikh Genocide in 1984 and the ‘Decade of Disappearances’ in Punjab, many Sikhs sought asylum in or otherwise immigrated to the United States in the interest of their safety. Even today, the threat of transnational repression from the government in Delhi underscores the value of the protections that the United States can offer for the inherent rights and freedoms of all people.
Ultimately, if this rule is implemented, fewer Sikhs and others seeking security and opportunity in the United States will be able to find it—at a time of profound global instability. For these reasons, we encourage you to use our free advocacy tool to submit your public comment today. You can start with the pre-written text, but feel free to personalize it to share your own story or emphasize why you oppose this kind of policy.
The Sikh Coalition will be submitting our own public comment in opposition to this rule, and we look forward to providing further updates. For more information on this policy proposal, review this one-pager and this ‘five things to know’ summary from the Asylum Seekers Advocacy Project.
As always, the Sikh Coalition urges you to practice your faith fearlessly.
