December 16, 2025 (Sacramento, California) — Today, the Sikh Coalition is pleased to share that a resolution is coming for truckers in California who were set to have their commercial driver’s licenses (CDLs) cancelled.
Last week, the Sikh Coalition had a productive meeting with the California Department of Motor Vehicles (CA-DMV) on this issue. Today, the San Francisco Chronicle publicly confirmed that the CA-DMV would begin reissuing non-domiciled CDLs to prevent the cancellations of those licenses from occurring on January 5, 2026. We look forward to reviewing the new policy from CA-DMV and will share details for the trucking community as soon as possible.
For context, in November, the CA-DMV notified over 17,000 non-domiciled CDL holders saying that their licenses would be cancelled on January 5, 2026. This action was being taken due to various clerical problems related to expiration date mismatches with work permits and other issues, which the federal government was falsely claiming represented a safety risk. As a result, the Sikh Coalition and our partners were preparing to take legal action given that these license cancellations were targeted at particular groups of legal immigrants—including many Sikh immigrant drivers. As reported by the Chronicle, the CA-DMV has since sent a letter to the Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration (FMCSA) saying that they would move forward with reissuing CDLs with the paperwork issues resolved beginning this week.
“States like California should be defending truckers’ rights against the federal government’s overreach, and providing a clear process for drivers to resolve these wrongful cancellation notices is setting things on the right course,” said Munmeeth Kaur, Sikh Coalition Legal Director. “Drivers depend on trucking for their families’ livelihoods, and California depends on truckers to keep the economy moving, so we are encouraged by this outcome.”
If you have questions about this policy before the Sikh Coalition is able to issue our full analysis, leave a message on our Punjabi language trucker hotline (212-287-9169) and we will be sure to share more information with you when as soon as possible. Additionally, if your CDL has been confiscated, please contact the Sikh Coalition immediately so that we can escalate your case.
Finally, the Sikh Coalition noted with concern Transportation Secretary Sean Duffy’s remarks late last week, where he appeared to be targeting CDL holders in New York in the same way the Trump Administration has attempted to do in California. If you live in New York, learn more about the action we are taking in that state here.
As always, the Sikh Coalition urges you to practice your faith fearlessly.
