March 12, 2026 (Washington, DC) — The Sikh Coalition is reaching out to share multiple campaigns where you can TAKE ACTION and engage your members of Congress today.
Oppose the SAVE America Act: Roughly a year ago, we urged sangat members to oppose the Safeguard American Voter Eligibility (SAVE) Act, a misleadingly-named bill that would impose serious new barriers to voter registration and registration renewal. A new iteration of the bill, called the SAVE America Act, is currently in the news—most recently because President Trump has commented extensively on it. The President recently said on social media that he “will not sign other Bills until this is passed,” and reportedly told a gathering of House Republicans that by passing the bill, “you will win the midterms and you will win every election for a long time.”
As a reminder, the SAVE America Act would require in-person documentary proof of citizenship, such as a passport or birth certificate in combination with a photo ID, to register to vote or update your voter registration (after a move, for example) regardless of any state and local rules. This would make voter registration online or by mail effectively impossible, and in-person efforts to register or update your registration would take longer and require the presentation of documents that more than 21 million Americans do not have readily available. The new version of the bill also adds a requirement to show photo ID at the polls, and mandates that states give up their voter information to the Department of Homeland Security for “checking.”
These new requirements would also be especially problematic for several groups—including potentially Sikhs. Among members of our community, it is not uncommon for one’s identity documents to have mismatching names, with ‘Kaur’ or ‘Singh’ listed as an individual’s last name on one document, and as their middle name (with a different last name) on another document. Under the SAVE America Act, these kinds of differences could keep Sikhs from being able to exercise their right to vote. Several other groups could be similarly impacted by the SAVE America Act’s additional bureaucratic ‘red tape,’ including millions of people who have taken their spouse’s last name, as well as voters of color and lower income voters (both groups who are statistically less likely to have access to these documents).
In February, the SAVE America Act passed the House by a vote of 218-213. You can use our free tool to contact your senators and urge them to vote against it at thesikh.co/save-america-act.
Oppose the Dalilah Law: In his most recent State of the Union address, President Trump called on Congress to pass a bill he called “the Dalilah Law,” which he said would “bar illegal aliens from getting commercial drivers’ licenses (CDLs).” Under both federal and state law, it is already illegal for people who are not authorized to be in the United States to have such licenses.
Regardless, elected officials in both the Senate and the House of Representatives have since introduced the Dalilah Law (H.R.7793 / S.3917). As written, however, their bill targets immigrants who are already in the United States legally. It would revoke the CDLs of roughly 200,000 people who are authorized to work in the United States and disqualify large groups of immigrants from ever pursuing a CDL based solely on their immigration status. It would also revoke the CDL of anyone who took an authorization test in a language other than English, which was legally offered at the time.
The Sikh Coalition believes that punishing hardworking and rule-abiding truckers because they happen to be immigrants is wrong, and that smearing them because of their heritage is shameful. You can use our free tool to contact your representative and senators and urge them to oppose the Dalilah Law at thesikh.co/dalilah-law.
