May 17, 2025 (Nationwide) — Today, the Sikh Coalition joins Act to Change to commemorate the 7th Annual National Day Against Bullying and Hate with hundreds of partners and allies across the country.
The theme for this year, The Future of Allyship, invites communities to come together in solidarity against bullying, bigotry, and hatred, in whatever form and wherever it takes place. Today’s youth—particularly Asian American, Pacific Islander, immigrant, LGBTQ+, or disabled youths—are subjected to various forms of harassment and violence. Bullying happens in classrooms, the internet, and throughout our communities where young people are left to face the reality of isolation, anxiety, and self-harm because of the violence and harassment they face.
This is a reality that the Sikh Coalition is, unfortunately, intimately familiar with. Last year, working in collaboration with academic researchers, we released ‘Where Are You Really From?’ A National Sikh School Climate Report (WAYRF). Based on survey responses from nearly 2,000 Sikh students across the United States, we learned that 78 percent of Sikh students experienced bullying behavior, 11 percent reported being bullied by or facing discrimination from teachers or school staff, and 63 percent of Sikh students said that teachers or staff “almost never” or “never” intervened when bullying happened in front of them. Our analysis also indicated that male Sikh students with visible articles of faith were more likely to experience severe and physical bullying, and that schools with less inclusive curricula and policies were more likely to see bullying incidents. WAYRF also includes more than 50 recommendations for officials and all levels of schools and government to counter bullying, as well as an updated step-by-step guide for parents who are concerned that their child is facing bullying and further such resources and guidance.
For more than 20 years, the Sikh Coalition has been fighting for Sikh and other students to be able to practice their faith fearlessly in spaces they occupy—including schools, where all children should feel safe and seen. This year, we are deeply humbled to be recognized as Act to Change’s ‘Allied Organization Of The Year’ for our work. Sikh Coalition Managing Director of Education and Community Development Rucha Kaur will accept the honor at tonight’s 2025 Changemakers dinner. We are grateful for Act to Change as an essential partner in our shared work against bullying, and we look forward to another year of collaboration.
As always, the Sikh Coalition urges you to practice your faith fearlessly.
