August 13, 2025 (Nationwide) — As students return to schools across the country, the Sikh Coalition is sharing new and updated free-to-use resources that are available for Sikh students and parents to share with educators and school officials. Over the next month, we look forward to shining a light on our education work and additional ways that sangat members can get involved to support inclusive education for all.
Sikh Awareness Presentations
Staff and volunteers with the Sikh Coalition have been leading Sikh Awareness presentations in schools, workplaces, and interfaith meetings for more than 20 years. Generally, the presentations last between 45 minutes to an hour, but presenters can shorten or lengthen that time depending on the venue and audience. For back-to-school purposes, we have presentations catered to elementary school students, middle/high school students, and educators. If you need the Sikh Coalition’s assistance presenting or preparing, please contact education@sikhcoalition.org.
Lesson Plans and Classroom Materials
Our updated Back to School Toolkit includes the above-mentioned Sikh awareness presentation for parents, as well as anti-bullying brochures, lesson plans, Know Your Rights materials, accommodation letters for articles of faith, and more resources—all of which help increase knowledge among students, teachers, and administrators, as well as protect Sikh children if problems arise at school. This fall, we also look forward to sharing three new lesson plans with the sangat; more details will be coming soon! Finally, if schools are interested in planning visits to your local gurdwara, we have updated our Guide to Visiting a Gurdwara and our Gurdwara Open House Toolkit for non-Sikh audiences.
Dear Colleague Letter
In March, the Sikh Coalition shared two critical new resources for Sikh teachers, parents, and others who want to defend inclusive education in our schools: A “Dear Colleague” letter and simple summary document (English and Punjabi) to explain the legality of “diversity, equity, and inclusion” (DEI) programs and projects within our nation’s education system—including efforts to teach about Sikhi and support Sikh students. The announcement of this resource followed the Department of Education’s own Dear Colleague letter on the subject, published in February, which took an aggressive stance against anything related to DEI in schools and made broad claims about the legality of all educational content and activities. This resource comes at a critical time given continued state- and federal-level attacks on all things DEI in schools; the Sikh Coalition continues to believe that school curricula and services should reflect the rich and vibrant communities that exist inside and outside classrooms, and that all students benefit from a robust, inclusive, and accurate education.
Step-by-Step Guide to Addressing Bullying
Finally, if you are concerned that your child is being bullied, know that there are many options between doing nothing and filing a serious lawsuit. Our step-by-step guide in both English and Punjabi to navigating a bullying situation, published alongside our groundbreaking and still highly-relevant research Where Are You Really From?, helps identify what parents can do on their own and how the Sikh Coalition can help along the way.
For the next month, keep a close eye on the Sikh Coalition’s emails and social media channels. We are excited to share more back-to-school resources and education-related work! If you have any questions, don’t hesitate to reach out to education@sikhcoalition.org.
As always, the Sikh Coalition urges you to practice your faith fearlessly.
