August 19, 2025 (Nationwide) — The Sikh Coalition is excited to announce two new lesson plans this month, just in time for back to school season for students, parents, and educators.
The first lesson plan, called “On the Road: Sikh American Truck Drivers,” was created as a collaboration between the Asian American Education Project and the Sikh Coalition. Punjabi and Sikh American truck drivers account for 20 percent of our country’s trucking industry, and this resource will help students explore the unique history of and challenges faced by these essential employees. The lesson plan is appropriate for students in grades 9 through 12; it includes activities, vocabulary list, discussion questions, and more.
The second lesson plan is called “Innovative Changemaker.” It focuses on the life and work of Dr. Narinder Singh Kapany, widely known as the father of fiber optics. The lesson plan was developed by the Sikh Coalition in collaboration with Dr. Harpreet Kaur Dhir. Students will learn about Dr. Kapany’s history, work in fiber optics, and his lasting legacy in the fields of science and technology, art, and more. This lesson plan includes a slide deck, interactive projects focused on writing and art, and more; it is appropriate for students in grades 6 through 12.
“Sikh history has been underexplored for far too long in our nation’s classrooms—in turn resulting in a lack of understanding about Sikhs and our experiences in the United States,” said Savleen Singh, Sikh Coalition Senior Education Manager. “We are grateful for partnerships with organizations such as the Asian American Education Project and individuals like Dr. Dhir, because these kinds of partnerships produce stronger and more inclusive educational material. Any student or parent can take these lesson plans to their school and recommend them to teachers and administrators.”
These resources build on the Sikh Coalition’s ongoing work to ensure educators understand and are better able to support Sikh students. As a reminder, you can access resources such as our updated Back to School Toolkit, our step-by-step guide in both English and Punjabi to navigate a bullying situation, our groundbreaking research project Where Are You Really From?, our “Dear Colleague” letter and simple summary document (English and Punjabi) focused on protecting the legality of inclusive education, and more. We will continue to share updates about our work this fall.
As always, the Sikh Coalition urges you to practice your faith fearlessly.
