June 17, 2026 (Nationwide) — In a time of significant uncertainty and rising alarm for immigrant families, the Sikh Coalition has a new resource for sangat members in need: the Immigrant Family Preparedness Guide, available in both English and Punjabi.
This guide was created by the Sikh Coalition to provide families of all immigration statuses with clear, accessible information and practical steps. It covers a range of topics, including but not limited to:
Different immigration authorities and potential sources of legal guidance;
Essential “Know Your Rights” (KYR) information for interacting with immigration officers in multiple different contexts;
Considerations for children and other dependents in the event of a parent’s immigration arrest, including the identification of caregivers, preparation of important travel documents, and how to discuss these issues with children;
Suggestions for financial planning and preparation in an immigration context; and
Tips on how to centralize and formalize important family documentation.
The guide also includes a comprehensive list of legal, KYR, mental health, and community resources. Where possible, it also details location-specific information for states with a significant Sikh population like New York and California.
“It can be difficult for families with mixed immigration status to consider the worst-case scenario,” said Aasees Kaur, Sikh Coalition Community Development Director. “Even so, in a time of increasingly aggressive immigration enforcement—including the detention of people who are lawfully present in this country—thorough preparation can help families make informed decisions before a crisis occurs. It is our hope that this guide can serve as a starting point for families, and provide them a pathway to asking the right questions and consulting with vetted resources.”
If you are interested in having the Sikh Coalition speak with your gurdwara either virtually or in-person about the content included in the Family Preparedness Guide, please email immigration@sikhcoalition.org. In the meantime, we continue to collate immigration resources, including Punjabi-language content, for free on our website at thesikh.co/immigration. Our most recently published resource is a Punjabi translation of the Interfaith Center for New York’s (ICNY’s) guide for communities navigating an individual’s arrest by ICE; you can view the English version from ICNY here, and our translation here.
As always, the Sikh Coalition urges you to practice your faith fearlessly.
