September 22, 2025 (Dallas, TX) — As summer officially winds down, the Sikh Coalition was honored to attend and speak at the National Religious Freedom in Public Schools Summit in Dallas, Texas from Monday, September 15 to Tuesday, September 16.
Founded just a year ago by the Sikh Coalition, Americans United for the Separation of Church and State, and Interfaith Alliance, the Coalition of National Religious Freedom in Public Schools convened this gathering of 150+ advocates in attendance from over 22 states that are committed to education that elevates teaching about all faith traditions in an accurate and constitutionally appropriate way. Senior Education Director Manpreet Kaur and Senior Education Manager Savleen Singh attended the two day conference. On Monday, September 15, Singh presented a speech called “From Defense to Offense: Advocacy to Expand Religious Freedom in Public Schools.” In her remarks, she spoke about advancing religious literacy in public schools and highlighted the importance of equipping teachers with the right professional development tools to support children of all backgrounds; she also shared the challenges that Sikh children face and the work that can be done to support Sikh youth.
“Throughout the conference, we were able to connect with people from civil rights organizations that we regularly collaborate with to share our lesson plans, curricula resources, and the data from our ‘Where Are You Really From,’” said Manpreet. “The power of personal stories matter in all spaces, and it was empowering to see Savleen passionately share why it is important for her and the Sikh Coalition to be in this work.”
Additionally, on Sunday, September 14, Manpreet and Savleen connected with youth and sangat at the Euless Gurdwara in Dallas, Texas, to share resources and provide updates on the Sikh Coalition’s education work. It is important for the Sikh Coalition to directly work and connect with sangat to ensure they have the resources and tools for our Sikh youth’s education, and we are deeply grateful to the Euless Gurdwara for welcoming our team!
As a reminder, all of the Sikh Coalition’s education resources are free to use and available on our website. These include our updated Back to School Toolkit, our step-by-step guide in both English and Punjabi to navigate a bullying situation, our groundbreaking research project Where Are You Really From?, our “Dear Colleague” letter and simple summary document (in English and Punjabi) focused on protecting the legality of inclusive education, and more. We also recently released two new lesson plans: “On the Road: Sikh American Truck Drivers” about Sikh contributions to the American trucking industry, and “Innovative Changemaker,” which focuses on the life and work of Dr. Narinder Singh Kapany. Our education work of course continues beyond the summer, and we will continue to share news, resources, and more throughout the year.
As always, the Sikh Coalition urges you to practice your faith fearlessly.
