August 28, 2025 (Nationwide) — As students who maintain their Sikh articles of faith get started in a new school year, the Sikh Coalition is glad to share updated accommodation letters for your child or student’s articles of faith.
You can find the pre-written accommodation letters on our website via this page: Scroll down to “School Uniform and Sports Accommodations,” and then click each box to automatically download a Word file. Letters are available to request accommodations for your child’s beard, kirpan, articles of faith in the context of sports, and articles of faith in the context of school uniforms; additionally, we have a general one-pager on accommodations here. The letters are pre-written, with spaces for you to fill in information like your child’s name, school, and other details; you can then print them and take them to the main office of your child’s school.
“All students should be able to practice their faith freely without needing to compromise their education, and vice versa,” said Navi Kaur Kahlon, Sikh Coalition Education Advisory Committee member. “These resources from the Sikh Coalition make it very easy for parents to clearly request accommodations and provide additional information about why the Sikh articles of faith are so important to our youth.”
Submitting an accommodation request is always the first step if your child encounters difficulty or resistance from school officials (including teachers, coaches, or administrators) with their kesh, kara, dastaar, or kirpan. If issues persist and/or if the school is not responsive to the request, you can reach out to the Sikh Coalition’s team for assistance via the legal intake form. The Sikh Coalition has helped resolve issues around articles of faith for Sikh students across the nation—most often without ever needing to take major steps like a formal lawsuit.
As a reminder, all of the Sikh Coalition’s education resources are free to use and available on our website, including our updated Back to School Toolkit, our step-by-step guide in both English and Punjabi to navigate a bullying situation, our groundbreaking research project Where Are You Really From?, our “Dear Colleague” letter and simple summary document (English and Punjabi) focused on protecting the legality of inclusive education, and more. We will continue to share updates about our work this fall.
As always, the Sikh Coalition urges you to practice your faith fearlessly.
