April 13, 2026 (Nationwide) — On the eve of Vaisakhi, the Sikh Coalition is excited to share several relevant resources for sangat to ensure Sikh representation in schools as well as encourage the observance of Sikh Awareness and Appreciation Month (SAAM).
Toolkit to Request a SAAM Resolution From Your Local Government
In the past, community members have leveraged the significance of Vaisakhi and SAAM to deliver Sikh awareness presentations, share anti-bullying resources in schools, and facilitate important conversations with non-Sikh community leaders. Advocating for a state, county, city, or school board-level SAAM resolution will increase understanding between Sikhs and our non-Sikh neighbors at the local level. We have created a step-by-step guide and toolkit, including draft language for the resolution, so that you can request that your elected officials to honor and celebrate the Sikh community.
Introducing Our School Engagement Guide
In order to support parents in encouraging further inclusion of the Sikh identity in classrooms, the Sikh Coalition has put together a new School Engagement Guide highlighting many of our existing resources and activities. This document compiles age-appropriate and ready-to-use classroom materials designed to fit into existing classroom curriculum without any extra added work. With these tools, we can work together to proactively ensure that every child’s identity is respected.
If you have questions about any of our resources, please don’t hesitate to contact the Sikh Coalition for further help at education@sikhcoalition.org. Learn more about just a few of these free-to-use items below!
NEW! What is Vaisakhi? Presentation: We have created a simple, ready-to-use slide deck for students, parents, and community members to help introduce Vaisakhi in school settings. This resource covers the basics of what Vaisakhi is, how Sikhs celebrate, and its significance in the Sikh faith. We encourage you to use this slide deck as an easy way to share and educate others about Vaisakhi, in the school setting and beyond. You can find the presentation here.
NEW! Resources around Bhai Jaswant Singh Khalra: After commemorating the 30th shaheedi of Bhai Jaswant Singh Khalra last year, the Sikh Coalition continues to uplift his story—including in classrooms. In collaboration with Dr. Harpreet Kaur Dhir, we have created a new unit of study, which is appropriate for grades 6 through 12 and developed around The Valiant: Jaswant Singh Khalra by Gurmeet Kaur. We additionally are working to make Khalsa school-specific workshop modules about this important book that has guiding themes of gurbani. Hear more from Dr. Dhir about the unit of study.
NEW! Religious Observance Guidance and Accommodation Request: We have created a new resource to support Sikh students and families in ensuring their religious practices are understood and respected in schools. This resource provides clear, practical guidance on requesting excused absences for Sikh observances like Vaisakhi, along with sample language that families can use when communicating with schools, teachers, or administrators. We continue to believe that all students should be able to fully participate in both their education and their Sikh identity.
NEW! Collaboration With Author of The Too Tight Patka: The Sikh Coalition was proud to partner with Tajinder Kaur Kalia, the author of The Too Tight Patka, a children’s book that celebrates Sikh tradition, the bond between siblings, and the beauty of growing into something new. Through this social media video, hear more from Kaur about her book and the broader importance of bringing Sikh-centric stories and characters in K-12 classrooms.
Lesson Plan for A Vaisakhi to Remember: Last year, the Sikh Coalition was honored to work in partnership with Sikh Coalition Senior Fellow and author of children’s book A Vaisakhi to Remember Simran Jeet Singh and Penguin Random House to create a lesson plan about the picture book. The resource will provide students with the opportunity to learn about Punjabi terms, the role of community, and how traditions are formed and sustained, even when immigrating to a new home.
Sikh Celebrations: Lessons & Activities for Inclusive Classrooms: Finally, parents can continue to use our Sikh Celebration: Lessons & Activities for Inclusive Classrooms resource. This toolkit, created for younger children in 2021, provides classroom-appropriate materials about Vaisakhi as well as Bandi Chhor Divas, Guru Nanak Dev Ji’s Gurpurab, and Guru Gobind Singh Ji’s Gurpurab. Each celebration section in this resource includes three components: a greeting card, a presentation, and a classroom activity. The sections are also customizable depending on how much time is allocated in class.
As always, the Sikh Coalition urges you to practice your faith fearlessly.
