March 30, 2026 (Nationwide) — In observance of April being Sikh Awareness and Appreciation Month (SAAM) and Vaisakhi fast approaching, the Sikh Coalition wants to ensure that local sangats have the resources to pass Sikh awareness resolutions in school districts, city councils, and state governments and to engage their children’s classrooms with informative, age- and school-appropriate content about Sikhs and Sikhi.
In the past, community members have leveraged the significance of Vaisakhi and SAAM to deliver Sikh awareness presentations, share anti-bullying resources in schools, and facilitate important conversations with non-Sikh community leaders. Advocating for a resolution (also sometimes called a proclamation) will increase understanding between Sikhs and our non-Sikh neighbors at the local level. We have created a step-by-step guide and toolkit on how you can ask your elected officials to honor and celebrate the Sikh community in this way. Follow these three easy steps to help your local government proclaim April as SAAM:
Decide which government official you want to request a resolution from and look up their contact information at https://www.usa.gov/elected-officials. You can request a resolution from your Governor, State Legislature, City or County Council, and/or School Board. Please note that some government websites have a resolution request form, where you can ask for a SAAM resolution using the draft language in our toolkit. If you are unsure of how to submit a resolution request, it is best to contact the office directly via phone or email.
When calling, emailing, or filling out a request form, introduce yourself and share a little more information about the local Sikh community with the government official’s office (e.g. when the first gurdwara was established in the area, notable news or seva in the sangat, etc.). Ask the office to introduce a SAAM resolution to ensure that more community members are aware of the U.S.-based Sikh community and our history in and contributions to the United States. Again, all of this content can be found in our toolkit.
Regularly follow-up with the office and keep the Sikh Coalition updated about the status of your resolution request. You can email Sikh Coalition staff at advocacy@sikhcoalition.org with questions or concerns.
In addition to our SAAM resolutions toolkit, the Sikh Coalition also has many materials for parents and students to celebrate Vaisakhi in their classrooms. Our lesson plan for Sikh Coalition’s Senior Fellow Simran Jeet Singh’s children’s book A Vaisakhi to Remember is a great tool for elementary-school aged students to learn about Punjabi terms, the role of community, and how traditions are formed and sustained, even when immigrating to a new home. Our Sikh Celebrations Toolkit, originally released in 2021, includes materials about Vaisakhi, Guru Nanak Dev Ji’s Gurpurab, and Guru Gobind Singh Ji’s Gurpurab in addition to.activities such as a greeting card, a presentation, and a classroom activity. Please note that if you want to share these resources with your children’s teacher for Vaisakhi, it is important to do so well in advance!
If you have questions about how to reach out to educators with this material, email education@sikhcoalition.org. And please find all of our resources available on our website.
As always, the Sikh Coalition urges you to practice your faith fearlessly.
