February 4, 2026 (Nationwide)— Thanks to a young sangat member’s outreach, the Sikh Coalition and textbook publisher Perfection Learning have successfully ensured the accurate representation of Sikhi in the textbook, AMSCO Advanced Placement World History Modern [1200-Present].
At the end of 2025, a Sikh high school student in Michigan reached out to the Sikh Coalition to share his frustration of how Sikhi was covered in his AP World History textbook. The textbook repeatedly incorrectly described Sikhi as a blend of Hinduism and Islam, and offered little detail on other aspects of the Sikh faith and history. This student and the Sikh Coalition’s education team reviewed the book’s language and deemed its inaccuracy caused the need for correction.
With the help of AP World History teachers and the Sikh Coalition’s Co-Executive Board Chair Harpreet Singh, who serves as a Scholar of Sikh Studies at Harvard University, we proposed comprehensive revisions to the editor of the textbook. Our team is grateful to the editor and publishing team at Perfection Learning for hearing our concerns and their willingness and eagerness to make these corrections: As a result of this collaboration, our proposed revised language will be included in this spring’s reprint of the textbook!
“Perfection Learning’s AP World History textbook shapes how thousands of students understand the world, which means that inaccuracies have consequences,” said Savleen Singh, Sikh Coalition Senior Education Manager. “For decades, Sikhi has been minimized, mischaracterized, or treated as an afterthought in classroom materials, despite being the world’s fifth-largest organized religion. Correcting this is not about preference, but instead about truth and educational integrity. We are grateful for Perfection Learning’s willingness to help improve what is being taught about Sikhi in the AP World History curriculum, and we hope to encourage other publishers to seek help and expertise in revising their books in the future.”
The Sikh Coalition will continue to advocate for accurate and constitutionally-appropriate teaching of Sikhi, because we know such inclusive education helps to combat bias-based bullying against our youth. In addition to providing expertise to textbook writers and educators, this includes a continued focus on ensuring that Sikhi is included in state social studies standards across the country. All of our education work is only possible through the involvement of sangat members like the young Singh who first brought the textbook to our attention as well as the generous financial support of sangat members across the nation.
As always, the Sikh Coalition urges you to practice your faith fearlessly.
